crazy routes!
the day started with caroline sending me an sms at 7:30 am.
here was whats in the sms.
good morning noel, are you awake yet?
and i replied
sorry, im still asleep. Zzzzzzz
she replied again
haha, good one. see you at 8am
well then i, being be, had to stay in bed for another 30 more minutes before waking up.
when i finally opened my eyes, i looked at the time.
and i jumped straight out of bed to get washed up and stuff.
luckily caroline was late too :D
she arrived at about 8:10-ish and i had to make her wait another 5 more minutes before i got into the car. when i got in the car, guess who was in the front seat? WILLIAM, caroline's little but not so little brother.
so anyways, we headed over to gifford's to pick him up and later off we went to the sports complex (rakan muda) place.
apparently it that day was suppose to be the phase 2 launch of rakan muda.
what does it mean?
well it means that rakan muda was having a relaunch of their brand or something like that. they were probally going to die out or something. but anyways, it was quite a big launch. loads of people and stuff. more on this at the end of the entry.
so anyways, we met up with shahpur who took a cab there and was wondering around aimlessly.
after locating shampoo(shahpur), we headed over to register.
i joined in both lead and the speed competitions, and so did caroline. gifford joined the lead, and shampoo, was too freaked to join lead that he only signed up for speed.
i was surprised to see some really good climbers who have represented the country in competitions before. cuase as i was told, there was not going to be any national climbers in the comp. after asking around, it turned out that it was only not opened to those climbers who represented the country in the Asian X Games which was held in Shanghai. so much for being able to win something in this competition.
so anyways we waited and waited and waited for the isolation period to start.
when the isolation finally started, we quickly gathered under the little tent which was set up away from the view of the walls. luckily it wasn't such a long wait. but never the less it we had to wait about 20 minutes. after the wait, we were all called out for the 5 minute observation period.
observation period, note all of the hands flying everywhere as if they were climbing an invisible wall.
*observation period - when we get to look at the route for the first time and plan our route.
the mens route wasn't so bad. was about a 6b route. according to caroline, the womens route was also kinda easy.
anyways, once the whistle blew, marking the end of the observation period, all we climbers were herded back to the tent like sheep.
guess what, there was MORE waiting back at the tent. we had to wait for the preparation and also for our turn to be up.
everyone was getting all psyched up and was stretching and stuff.
there were people who were sitting around after stretching
sleeping,
giffy pretending to be asleep for the camera.
and yes, some had to make funny faces in front of the camera.
shahpur making faces at the camera.
so yeah, finally our turns were up and me, and caroline actually did quite well for the first round. i managed to finnish like 3 quaters of the first route.
well not to boast to much, but i could have actually finnish it. reason why i didnt, didnt get to warm up. so i got a flash pump.
*flash pump - this happens when you climb a hard route without having a proper good warm up.
*pump - when your musles fell all hard and tired out, due to exessive levels of lactic asid in the muscles.
well after all that climbing, it was lunch time. there was a stall there that surved rice with different kinds of other dishes which you could choose.
and guess what, they look like
shit
i kid you not. they seriously look like they came outa some rhino's ass!
well thankfully, beside that stall, there was a ramli burger stall. so yeah, back to the old high school days where i ate burgers every day.
so yeah, cuase we had like another 10 million more hours to kill before it was caroline's turn for the womens finals, we headed off to the skate park, which was right beside the climbing wall.
most of the skaters and bikers were kinda sucky. always doing stunts that they could never ever land in their lifetime. but besides that, there were a few of them who stood out.
didnt get any photos tho. but just imagine someone on skates doing a back flip, etc. well they weren't super good, but they were better than the rest.
well after a long wait at the skate park, we headed back to the wall for the womens finals.
can you imagine, the ladies could climb the exact same route for their finals and semi finals. only difference was that the finals was on lead and the semi finals was on toprope. never the less, all the ladies made it to the finals cause there was only 9 of them all together.
here is a picture of caroline falling.
hahaha... cool eh?
well she was kinda pissed when she fell, cuase alittle more higher and she could have gotten third place, i think.
well after the womens finals, it was the mens finals. they gathered us all in the tent for the isolation, while the route setters went up the wall to set up the route.
so what did i do?
well i stretched, sat down, stretched somemore and finally, i fell asleep.
yes, the isolation was freaking hell long!
had to wait for about 1 and a half freaking hours doing nothing!
well while i was sleeping, shahpur said that i was actualy grinding my teeth really loud.
yes, i do grind my teeth when i sleep. no idea why.
when my turn came, i was so freaking happy to be able to get outa the tent and out to the wall.
whats the first thing i did when i got out? well i pretended that i was climbing an invisible wall!
must really look like a dumbo, doing that infront of everyone.
yeah, so the route was real confusing and i only managed to get up 5 draws.
*draws - a.k.a quick draws, runners, clips, clippie thinggies. these are the things you clip your rope into as you get higher, it is important you clip in, as it keeps you from hitting the ground.
so yeah, i fell at the 5th draw. was so pumped that i couldnt make the move that i eventually fell from.
after all that lead climbing, it was time for the speed climbing.
*speed climbing - as the name says, this type of climbing involves people racing up the wall as fast as they can. the ones with the fastest time wins.
well i'm not one of those who can speed climb. but i decided to just join this category for the fun of it. anyway its free ain't it?
well first the ladies went, caroline only made it to 4th place. missed 3rd by 2 seconds.
when my turn came up, at first i totally forgot that it was speed. when i ran to the wall i was climbing kinda slow. it took me about 2 seconds to realise that this was a speed climbing competition. anyhow i realised that i was gonna loose and was smiling to myself as i was climbing. well thats what shahpur said i was doing.
in the end it was a cool day. very little climbing in a very long period of time. joining this kind of competitions really sucks ass.
while we were leaving, there was tons and tons of people.
yesh, seriously damn freaking allot of people there. most of them are in uniforms tho, so it wasn't so cool. feels like they were paid to be there.
anyhow, on our way out, we encountered really jakun malays. those that have never seen white people before and those that act like idiots. this are the kind of people that are really turn this country into a shithole.
as we were walking out, someone said really loudly,
person in crowd 1: eh, ada orang putih datang sini! person in crowd 2: hahaha! dia tidak faham la!
then i looked at caroline and said,
noel: why don't you turn around and just give them a f*ck you?
caroline: well i really feel like saying something to them in malay, but they are not worth my time.
later down the road, we encountered yet another group of bozos.
bozo across the road: WELCOME TO MALAYSIA!
then caroline said,
caroline: now i really feel like shouting to them that i've been here for 10 years already. pfft, welcome to malaysia...
anyway, after all that jakun sightings, we got into the car and off we went home.
but seriously man, there were so many people there. in the complex itself there could easily be about 700 or more people. whats worst, is that people outside the complex on the road, acted as if they owned the road. even as we were driving out, they just stood infront of the road as if we were not even there. caroline had to actually drive around them as she didn't want to punch the horn.
anyway, here are some snapshots of the day. click on them to enlarge.
well thats for the random pics of the day.
now before i leave.
can you guess whose hair is this?

here it goes again
well i bet by the time you guys read this, i would have to say on tuesday.
so yeah, there is a competition coming up.
it actually came by suprise.
during camp(which i have yet to blog about), i got a call from sharon saying that there is a climbing competition on tuesday.
so yeah, she said it would be a really good chance to win, cause no NATIONAL CLIMBERS are ALLOWED!
woohoo!! so that means i would probally get 1st place!
well not to be very full of myself, but yeah, if i dont make any really stupid mistakes like reading the route wrongly, i would probally win!
so here are the details,
venue: some x park in mont kiara
time: 8am (registration)
competition types: dificulty(lead climbing) and speed climbing
so yeah, ill update when i have the chance!
hope i dont fall of the wall or someting....

procrastinate?
well guess what?
you are procrastinating!
YES! its the all too scary disease that allot of us suffer from.
the symptoms is that you know that you have something important to do, but somehow you find every other reason why you should not!
well if that sounds familiar, than you must be procrastinating.
unlike me, who finished my assignment 1 day before the deadline at 4am in the morning, there is a someone who is just sitting in front of the computer right now reading this blog entry and knowing that they should be doing something more important!
hahaha not that reading my blog isn't any less important :D
well so here is a message to all you guys out there.
get that procrastination outa our body.
how?
well just procrastinate till you cannot eat!
hahah!! get it?
procrastinATE till you cannot EAT!
past tense = ate
present tense = eat
hahahaa... yes i know. i'm just too cool for you...

Summit ROXX '07 climbing competition.
after that i dropped by home to get my gear and about 5 minutes of sleep then i was off to summit.
the competition was fun. there was all together 6 categories.
- mens top rope
- womens top rope
- mens bouldering
- womens bouldering
- mens combined (top rope & bouldering) [i joined this category]
- womens combined (top rope & bouldering)
it started with the top rope, and later bouldering after lunch.
the top rope routes were all set in the gym. the routes were actually not so bad. but the only thing i hated about the top rope session was that the lines were too freaking long! there was not enough time to climb. what happens is that you spend 90% of your time hanging around waiting for your turn.
for the bouldering session, it was actually much better and fast paced. the routes were in the gym itself, and also in the main concourse. the session was launched in the concourse. it was real good cause this time we didn't have to wait that long. longest wait was about 3-5 minutes. i was doing all the do-able routes on the boulder in the concourse and later once that was all done i went up to the gym to do the routes there. the funny thing is that the routes in the gym was actually harder(points wise) than the routes in the concourse. but never the less, it was fun.
after the bouldering session was done, they had the dyno competition.
*dyno - a point when a climber jumps off the wall, using dynamic movement, towards another hold that is beyond reach. what it means is that the climber basically jumps from one place to another.
the dyno routes that were given were really fun to watch.
after the dyno competition, it was the prize giving ceremony.
here are the results for the comps.

well it had to be either akmal or me anyway.
here are the pics from the event.
this is andrew, climbing a route way to easy for him.
ed and sho. full of energy and ever happy to climb.
bradley, always wanting to climb, but seems to be always killing his tendons.

noel, the one whose name is christmas and seems to love jumping around the boulder cave in camp5
sho on the roof
meet photographer man, a.k.a. jason highway
malaysia's top climber. hafzanizam! he is freaking strong for his size.
all in all, this was the largest congregation of climbers that i have ever seen.. probably about 200 or so.
well this is all... well i might post up the videos when im more free...
the end...
Bandages, broken bones, and 'Almost' dead people
a few days ago, Camp5 had a first-aid training course for their staff. there were the usually seen people from camp5 and also the non so usually seen people from Blocx.
*Blocx is the company that makes the walls for Camp5. even though they are different companies, they are owned by the same big boss people.
the day started with us gathering at the climbing gym at 9. even though most of us were there at 9, the day was a really sleepy day because:
- it was raining.
- it was kinda early in the morning.
- we all didn't really have enough sleep.
- the doctor guy was kinda boring.
hmmm... let me see if i can still recall what we learned that day.
what i learned from the first aid course:
- what is the definition of first-aid
- 1st, 2nd and 3rd degree burns
- different types of fractures
- how to make an arm sling
- how to make a head bandage
- how to save someone who is choking
- CPR
- recovery position
anyway here is what happened on day 2
next day, rushed to camp5 because i was late for the EXAM!
well very typical of me to be late for an exam. isn't it just so fun to be late for something as important as an exam?
well even though i was late, i wasn't as late. i was still in time for the exam and was still earlier than some.
my exam partner that sat on the same table as me was non other than ms. sue wong!
*sue wong - HR manager and the person we see to get our pay check. she is also one of the most funniest people in camp5
during the exam, which i did not study for, i was doing my best not to cheat or anything, but there was this person sitting opposite me who kept going "eh, whats the answer for this?" and "do you know what is CPR?" and also "eh, whose notes are those on the chair? can check the answer from there?" and it went on and on!! hahaha! but luckily she was sitting opposite me. if it weren't for sue, i wouldn't had cheated and gotten as many correct answers.
anyway after the test, we were all told to go to the bouldering area and wait for our names to be called for the CPR, choking, bandage tying skills, and recovery positions. we had to wait a really really long time. so here are a few snaps that i took while waiting.
after all that lazing around and waiting and picture snapping, we headed off to take our other tests.
had to perform CPR on this doll, the choking saving maneuver thing on this ugly looking doll, and tie the bandages and also the recovery position.
for some reason, the head bandage makes people look like a maid.
when aqmal did his CPR on the doll, he blew too hard and it actually farted! it was so funny! its one of those 'you gotta be there to see it ' kinda laughs.
anyway after it all was over i had to go to work. imagine, staying in the gym for more than 15 hours!

Freedom Writers
but recently, i began searching for the movie, and guess what. i found it!
yes the freedom writers is a good movie. i do highly recomend the movie to people who love watching movies with really touching story lines and also the typical 'i'm a nobody who comes around and changes things' kinda plot.
here is a short review.
Erin gruwell, a person who has never thought in a class room before, decided to start teaching in a high school called wilson classical high school in long beach california. the timeline of the movie is in 1994, after some racial riot which caused allot of havoc and stuff.
wilson classical high school is a school which has allot of students which are part of racial gangs. so what happens when you mix different races which are in different racial gangs together in one school? well you get allot of hate and fighting.
the students in erin gruwell's class, all in their first year of high school, all disliked each other because they were part of different gangs. most of them only attend class becuase they are forced to, not by their parents but by officers who tells them that its either they go to high school or they will go to juvenile hall. thats where all the bad kids go to.
so here comes erin into the class at first hated by her students. then she decides to do something to change her students lives.
a really touching story which takes place in room 203. a true story.
my rating 8.5 out of 10
yes, so here ends my review for freedom writers.
i know the poster might look like a movie about someone who is traveling through time, due to the other people moving faster than the coloured one, but its a good movie.
well this is my first review of a movie, so i know its alittle crappy and stuff, but cut my some slack lah!

Productive day?
while most, or probably all, of the students of taylor's college got the day off, why was i entering a college that i did not study at?
after setting up, i heard from some of the coaches that i could park in the college. so i went with joey to the market place to move my car and park it into the great taylor's parking lot. wieh we got the my car, i realised that i didn't have my keys with me. then it struck me, i must have left my keys in the car AGAIN! but thanks to my great strategy and skill, i managed to get the keys out yet again.
bet you guys are wondering how right? well here is the secret. i always leave my windows wound down a little to ensure that the heat in the car ain't to much. what i do is i squeeze my hand through the gap and pull out the key. the last time it happened sandra stuffed her hand it there. my forearms were too huge to fit through it. for some unknown reason, i managed to squeeze it through this time.
yes everyone, this is alvin. note the newly pierced lip. also present for the dinner was:
Kimberly!
Joey, who left even before the food arrived.
and finally nik!
the best thing was that because we didn't think that a few people wouldn't turn up, or LEAVE EARLY, we over ordered. we had some fried squid thing, which i can't recall the name, the italianis roasted chicken thing, and finally spaghetti and meat balls. believe you me, it was a real pain to consume all that food. plus, i ordered a bottomless cup of ice lemon tea. so i practically filled my tummy full of water. before the food arrived, i already was on my 4th refill. so i had to force myself to eat.
anyway, the weird thing about today was that there was so many people from DU that i knew. to name a few, there was
mr. yeo ming li,
mr.augustine mah,
and finally mr. loo calvin.
they were there with some other people too, but i can't remember who they were.
well after that great heavy meal, i headed over to Camp5 for some climbing!
since i was so extremely full with food, i only did a few lead routes on the sentinal wall. only the easy ones too tho. after getting my regular dose of climbing, i decided to head home before the gym closed for the day.
all in all, this day was a really packed full day, filled with things to do. haven't really been so packed full in a while. but this week end it going to be a busy one.
well until next time, here is a picture that you can look at in anticipation of the next post.

don't you just feel like flying?
whats this edition about you ask?
well its an essay on "what i did yesterday with miriam, marcus, and sandra"
yes, as the title suggests, we went jogging yesterday.
it all started with us talking a walk down to bread story, to get some food to fill our tummies! after purchasing all those pastries, we made our way to marcus' car which was in the open air car park in one utama. on our way there, we passed by a familiar sight. smack right outside the entrance near the giant supermarket, the plants, floor and metal barriers were YELLOW!
why yellow?
well because earlier that day we had a training from camp5 on "how to use a fire extinguisher"
yes my friends, its all yellow everywhere because all of us camp5 staff got 2 whole fire extinguishers to empty. so we extinguished any life forms that were hiding in those bushes. there was so much yellow-powder-fire-extinguisher-essence that surely anything that was there would have surely died. while we were training how to be firemen, mr. jeremy, kept reminding us to not attempt to put out the fire at all, unless you decide to be heroic. well i think thats what he said.
anyway we walked by and admired our art! such great art. after staining there admiring the art for like 2 seconds, we made our way to the car while eating our recently bought buns from the bun shop.
on our way to lembah kiara, we had to stop by the infamous traffic lights in front of one utama.
why infamous you ask? is there something really exciting to see there?
HELL NO! its so infamous because it always takes forever for the lights to change. so you would end up spending like 5 minutes in one spot doing........ NOTHING.
but of course we had better things in mind. we aren't like everyone else. so this is what we decided to do.
yes ladies and gents, we decided to make silly faces in front of the camera and do some head banging action!
after awhile the light turned green and our attention shifted back to the ever changing pictures that changes when the car moves.
before we went to the park, we had to stop by miriam's, so that she could get changed and stuff. so knowing me, i can;t sit still in the car for too long, i went into her house to look around. i went into her garden and poked around and saw this tank filled with algae and some water lily plants. you wouldn't ever believe what was in the tank.... a pair of EELs!! how cool is that? miriam has EELs as pets! she has a black cat, a frog, and god knows what else in her house.
anyway after poking around abit, i looked at the car and saw marcus standing outside saying "i'm going jogging like this!"
*note the LAME looking high socks and matching coloured socks
anyway, miriam was ready, so of we went to the park!
before any form of exercise, it is always good to STRETCH!
yes, stretching helps to worm up your body and also helps to make your muscles more stretched and ready for the upcoming exercise! niglecting to stretch your muscles before exercise, especially hardcore exercise, can result in muscle injury and strain. thats why i always stretch before i exercise!
after all that stretching, it was time to go JOGGING! so we went on our way with miriam in the lead as the pace setter. miriam and i decided to go for like 6 rounds around the park. it was the smaller round, but nevertheless it is still long.
after about almost 2 rounds, we had our first casualty. SANDRA DOWN!! so the three of us just turned and continued running away from the casualty. Hahaha! what else were we supposed to do, we were jogging. anyway, on the way we say many monkeys, people, people with really short shorts, and yes, very fat people trying to loose some weight. but the most amazing thing was that there was this monkey with a bottle of soybean. there was a stray in the bottle and guess what, the monkey was actually drinking from it!
well we continued jogging and jogging till it got dark and then after my 6th round, miriam only did 5, marcus about 3.5(i think), and sandra 1.00003, we all gathered in the workout section of the park to do our stretching.
stretching after exercise is also as important as stretching before exercise, as it would help your muscles become more flexible and more stretchier! failing to do so would only result in your muscles not being able to stretch to its fullest potential.
anyway, after the run, i was all out of breath and stuff because i ran the last 50 meters to the end. it felt sooooo good! reason why, because i haven't went for a jog in like 1.5 years. i almost forgot how great it felt to go jogging. when you go for a jog, look up to the sky. it makes you feel like you are flying. but you have to be at a fast enough speed in order to get enough wind in your face to simulate flying. plus you gotta make sure you don't bump into anyone.
at the stretching/workout place, we did loads of stretches and workouts. sandra and marcus was so good that they even showed me and miriam some of their cheer routines. sat and chat while stretching for a while. then it started. it was time for photos!
*miriam doing her splits
*sandra all tired out after her RUNFORMYLIFE incedent. for more info, check out her blog.
*me all tired out after the jog.
*the group
*the group again
well after all that exercise, it was time to go home.
When i got home, my legs were like all aching and stuff. but i'm a MAN, men don't complain about pain! no pain no gain! so anyway did the regular stuff at home and then went to bed.
here comes the coolest part. i couldn't sleep because my muscles felt oh so itchy. so what else should i do, start scratching! Hahaha! well actually i was kinda stretching my muscles while i was sleeping.
the next day my legs felt like jelly. i mean seriously. real soft squiggly jelly. every step i took was pain. and when i walked i actually felt that i was walking like a penguin. bobbing from side to side. when i stood still, my legs wobbled with every move i made.
well guys, this is what you get when you over exert yourself in an exercise. plus i doubt that i did enough stretching. well anyway I LOVE PAIN! FEEL THE PAIN, LOVE THE PAIN! Hahaha!
oh, before i end. today i saw this ad in the tele. it said buckle up behind. now the message that the government is trying to send to us is "even if you buckle up in the front seat, the back seat people can still die if they don't buckle up."
so remember guys, dont forget to buckle up while sitting in the back seat! Hahaha! as if anyone will ever do that.
